I bought this book by chance. I went to the bookshop for another publication, but the red cover and its title attracted me while I was standing close to the checkout.
I opened it and read the first pages:
“I felt nothing at the announcement of the death of my brother; not sadness or despair or joy or pleasure. I received the news as one would receive information on the weather, or would listen to any random person relating their account of their afternoon at the supermarket.”
It completely caught my attention. I read a bit further, then bought it. I came back home and started reading. I simply wasn't able to put it down.
Collapse by Édouard Louis is a devastating story of the author's family. True to my style, I do not want to spoil anything. I will only say that this book is not for everyone; it is for people who are brave enough to look at the darker, messier side of human connections.
I deeply admire how Édouard Louis is able to talk about such painful stories with such total clarity.
